French
“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.” – Chinese Proverb
What's a world without communication? Without connection? Without the means to share our thoughts and feelings? A world without diversity is a world without unity and we need to embrace all forms of language.
With a curriculum that is built on exposure, curiosity and the confidence to explore different cultures and language, we provide our children with the tools to accept that in a multi-lingual and global society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively.
Madresfield's map to proficient linguists
The first steps to become a successful linguist:
- Exposure to greetings in different languages
- Celebrating diverse cultures
- Confidence in speaking and listening.
KS2, my final destination. Up until now I have celebrated differences and learnt about the world around me and that the language people speak may not always match my own. Now I am armed with the stepping stones to speak and read another language that will open up the ways I can communicate. I now understand that language is vital in the multi-cultural world that I live in. I want to discover what the world has to offer, I need to have the tools to immerse myself in the culture and language that lies beyond my life here in Worcestershire. I want to be a linguist.
I can:
- Listen attentively, join in and respond in French
- Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes
- Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others
- Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary and phrases
- Accurately use pronunciation and intonation so that others understand
- Present my ideas and information orally
- Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
- Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French
- Understand new words that are introduced through using a dictionary
- Write phrases from memory
- Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
It's time for new adventures, Year 7 awaits: new languages, new words, new phrases. An opportunity to see the world, an opportunity to realise that there is a world out there waiting to be discovered. I am a linguist and because of that my journey is only just beginning.
Program of Study
Teachers in KS2 plan lessons using the 'Language Angels' scheme of work which ensures progression throughout the Key Stage and covers a wide range of vocabulary. Each year group starts the unit by recapping key vocabulary and phonics from French units before then starting to learn about a new key area of vocabulary in French.
